The Tsavo Highway, damaged during the Battle of Earth.

Tsavo Highway [1] was a highway in the East African Protectorate, Earth that ran from Voi, Kenya to Arusha, Tanzania.

Route description[edit]

A mileage sign on Tsavo Highway showing distances to Checkpoint 8 and Arusha, Tanzania.

The Tsavo Highway begins in the industrial port city of Voi at an intersection with Nairobi Road, a major roadway that continued east to New Mombasa. The road snakes through the hills west of Voi via tunnels and elevated viaducts, with a UNSC airbase within close vicinity.[1] Tsavo Highway runs past Voi Municipal Water Pump House 03 and Checkpoint 8 before descending back down to the flat, dry savannah. Eventually the road reaches the Tanzanian border, and afterwards the city of Arusha. [2]

Pipelines built and operated by the Global Water Campaign ran alongside the Tsavo Highway, carrying purified meltwater from Mount Kilimanjaro to be distributed throughout Africa.[3] This water passes through Pump House 03, which supplied water for the town of Voi.

The Tsavo Highway is maintained by the Tterrab Highway Authority,[2] which is known to have also maintained New Mombasa 105 East, an urban highway that connected northern Old Mombasa with New Mombasa.

History[edit]

Main article: Assault on the Tsavo Highway

The road within the vicinity of Voi suffered critical damage when the New Mombasa space elevator collapsed, raining debris such as support rings and cables all over the countryside surrounding New Mombasa. During the Battle of Earth, the Covenant occupied and barricaded the highway towards Voi with Wraith tanks, Choppers, and infantry formations.[1]

On November 17, 2552, John-117 and a band of UNSC Marines from the UNSC airbase assaulted the highway as they made their way to Voi.[1] Ultimately, the Tsavo Highway in Voi's vicinity would be glassed by the Fleet of Retribution in order to destroy all Flood that crashed into the city. [4]

Trivia[edit]

  • Tsavo Highway is the setting of Tsavo Highway, the third campaign mission of Halo 3.
  • Despite its name, Tsavo Highway does not run through the town of Tsavo, but instead the Nairobi Road as it heads for Nairobi.
    • Tsavo Highway could instead be named after the contemporary Tsavo West National Park, which the road runs through in order to reach Tanzania.
  • In Halo 3 Epsilon, a prerelease build of the game, there were road sign decals that mention a Checkpoint 4 that were removed from the final game.
